Wheat germ, propolis and royal jelly products are traditionally used as health food.

There are products traditionally used as health food despite not being included in the regulations as such. Among these substances, the three most important are wheat germ, royal jelly and propolis.

Wheat germ

Wheat germ is the living part of the grain and contains all the constituents necessary for the growth of the future plant. Is obtained by grinding pure wheat.

The most significant properties of this product are:

1. It is the richest natural source Vitamin E One of the most potent antioxidants. As such, it protects cells against a possible attack from free radicals. Vitamin E is necessary for the maintenance and stability of the cell membrane.
2. Contains amino acids of high biological value, essential fatty acids, B group vitamins, Antianemic acting substances and minerals like iron, zinc, copper, cobalt and manganese.

It is important to consider that essential fatty acids must be obtained through diet because the body can not synthesize them.

Wheat germ is beneficial for anyone, but is especially useful in two particular situations:

1. Deficiency states related to poor diet or illnesses that prevent normal absorption of nutrients.
2. Circumstances in which the body requires a higher protein intake, pregnancy, growth, chronic infections and bleeding.

Royal Jelly

Royal jelly is a product secreted by the hypopharyngeal glands and mandibular glands of nurse bees (worker bees from 5 to 14 days of age), when they have pollen, water and honey. From the nutritional point of view, is an important source of vitamins C, E, A, B vitamins, unsaturated fatty acids, amino, Hormonal substances and minerals like phosphorus, iron, calcium, copper and selenium.

Outstanding properties of royal jelly are:

1. It has a stimulating effect, toning and rebalancing the nervous system.
2. Improved cerebral oxygenation.
3. It provides the necessary energy for children and adolescents, especially at exam time and sports competition.
4. Regulates digestive disorders.
5. It promotes vasodilatation and proliferation of red blood cells, so it is used in cases of anemia or as a preventive of cardiovascular disease.
6. It has antimicrobial power.

Due to their excellent properties, royal jelly is an excellent food supplement in states of weakness or mental or physical exhaustion.

Propolis

Propolis is a resinous mixture of substances, gummy and balsamic viscous consistency, collected from certain parts of the plant by bees Apis mellifera, Which carry them into the hive, modifying in part with wax and salivary secretions. Its importance lies in its immunostimulatory properties, increasing the body’s resistance to infection.

The chemical composition of propolis depends on the plant source, but basically consists of a 50-55% resins and balsams, 30-40% of beeswax, essential oil 5-10%, 5% pollen and 5% of various organic materials and minerals. There are more than 160 compounds, of which 50% are phenolics, which are attributed pharmacological action.

The main phenols identified are:

Flavonoids: Flavones, isoflavones and flavanones.
Aromatic acids and esters: caffeic acid and cinnamic acid.
Aromatic aldehydes: vanillin and isovanillin.
Coumarins.
Phenolic triglycerides.

Another group of compounds and mineral elements found in trace quantities, which are of fundamental importance in the biological activity of propolis and cellular metabolism, highlighting the provitamin A and nicotinamide Addition of lactones, polysaccharides, amino acids and other substances not yet identified. The three products described are currently a growing demand and its inclusion in the diet provides health benefits.
